Job Summary:
The Correctional Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment within the correctional facility, overseeing the custody and control of inmates, and enforcing rules and regulations. This position requires exceptional communication skills, keen observation abilities, and the ability to respond swiftly and appropriately to any potential security threats or emergency situations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Maintaining Security:
- Conduct regular patrols and inspections of assigned areas to ensure the security and safety of the facility.
- Monitor inmate activities, behavior, and movements to prevent disturbances, escapes, or unauthorized activities.
- Conduct searches of inmates, cells, and common areas for contraband, weapons, or illegal substances.
- Enforce institutional rules, regulations, and procedures to maintain order and discipline.
2. Inmate Supervision and Control:
- Supervise and monitor inmate activities, ensuring compliance with facility rules and regulations.
- Conduct headcounts and inspections to verify inmate whereabouts and prevent escapes.
- Respond promptly to incidents, emergencies, and altercations, taking appropriate actions to de-escalate situations and maintain order.
- Escort inmates to and from various locations, such as courtrooms, medical facilities, and visitation areas.
3. Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of inmate activities, incidents, and disciplinary actions.
- Prepare reports and documentation related to inmate behavior, incidents, and rule violations.
- Assist in the processing of new inmates, including intake procedures, classification, and housing assignments.
- Collaborate with other correctional staff to ensure effective communication and coordination.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent educational qualification.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Successful completion of a certified correctional officer training program.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise discretion.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous tasks, such as restraining inmates if necessary.
- Familiarity with correctional facility policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Knowledge of security and safety protocols.
- Ability to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must pass a comprehensive background check, including criminal history and drug screening.
